See No Evil

Original Artwork | Acrylic on Canvas Board | 12" × 16"

She looks above it all. The question is whether she can actually see any of it.

See No Evil reimagines the familiar proverb for a world where looking away no longer requires closing our eyes. A bright blue virtual reality headset replaces the traditional hands over the face, allowing the woman to escape the physical world for one selected, filtered, and shaped by technology.

Her upward posture suggests confidence, even superiority, as though she has risen above whatever is happening around her. In reality, she has simply stopped looking. Even within her escape, she is not entirely in control of what she sees. Algorithms increasingly determine which images, ideas, and versions of reality reach us, creating worlds that can feel expansive while quietly becoming smaller.

The painting is one of three works in A.LaB's See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil series, which reimagines the ancient proverb for modern life. Across the series, three women confront different forms of disengagement: escaping reality through technology, becoming trapped within an information bubble, and losing the ability to speak.

In See No Evil, technology offers the most convincing escape of all. The work asks what we might fail to notice when the virtual world becomes more comfortable, entertaining, or appealing than the one directly in front of us.

Speak No Evil

Original Artwork | Acrylic on Canvas Board | 12" × 16"

She has something to say. She simply isn't allowed to say it.

Speak No Evil reimagines the familiar proverb through a contemporary lens. A ball gag replaces the traditional hand over the mouth, transforming an image associated with sexual submission into a symbol of enforced silence. Her wide eyes suggest a desire to speak, while the object across her mouth makes that impossible.

Bright turquoise, vivid red, and an intentionally striking expression give the painting a playful, Pop Art-influenced surface. That visual appeal is deliberately at odds with what is happening underneath. The longer you look, the less playful the image becomes.

In Speak No Evil, silence is not a choice. The work asks what happens when expectations surrounding sexuality, femininity, and submission begin to determine who gets to speak and who is expected to remain quiet.

Hear No Evil

Original Artwork | Acrylic on Canvas Board | 12" × 16"

She looks directly at us, confident, composed, and certain. But look a little closer. The headphones aren't plugged in.

Hear No Evil reimagines the familiar proverb through the modern phenomenon of confirmation bias and the information bubbles we build around ourselves. Bright headphones cover the woman's ears while their disconnected cord wraps around her neck like jewelry. She appears to be listening, but nothing from the outside world is actually getting through.

Her direct gaze is deliberately defiant. She projects the confidence of someone certain of what she knows, while the unplugged headphones suggest that certainty may exist within a closed system. The cord becomes both an accessory and a subtle restraint, symbolizing how the information bubbles that make us feel secure can also hold us back.

Across the series, three women confront different forms of disengagement: escaping reality through technology, becoming trapped within an information bubble, and losing the ability to speak.

In Hear No Evil, the choice not to listen is disguised as listening itself. The work asks how much of what we believe comes from engaging with the world around us, and how much comes from surrounding ourselves with voices that simply tell us what we already want to hear.

Why I Create

I create bold, psychologically charged artwork that invites a second look. Beneath the vivid colors and striking imagery are questions about identity, perception, distraction, and the world around us.

My work is designed to command attention, spark conversation, and reveal new meaning the longer you look. Learn More
